UPDATING MX RECORDS

UPDATING MX RECORDS
When a new organisation is created with an exchange mailbox, an important part of the set up process is to ensure the MX records are pointing to the correct place.
If you have a different domain provider to us it is always going to be an MX record that points to their server and not ours. Which will mean you won’t be able to send emails across the internet!
An easy way to check if the MX record is by using a website such as kloth to check the current MX record of the domain.
NOTE: all servers & domains in the pictures below are examples only
The MX record you want to make your new email accounts work correctly is: mail.exchangeemail.co.uk

Using Kloth to check MX Record

1.       Go to http://www.kloth.net/

2.       Click on services at the top, and then click whois from the list. You should then enter your domain name and then click look it up.

3.       Now scroll down and find the primary name server (its usually the top of the name server list). Make sure to copy the name server down so you can use it in the next search.

4.       Now click on services at the top, and then click nslookup from the list, you can then add the name server and the domain as done in the picture below. Select MX (mail exchage) as the query and then click look it up, it state: mx-cluster1.one.com.

5.       As you can see in this example the mail exchange server does not state mail.exchangeemail.co.uk

Now you know the MX record for your domain and that it is not correct. You can contact your domain provider and inform them that you need the MX records updated.
Once they do this for you your email will be operational.
If the Exchange email account is replacing an email account had previously with your domain provider (using pop3 for example), then allow 24-48 hours for all servers to update fully and then all mail should then be reaching your new exchange mailbox. If this is not the case, contact your administrator.
